Marcola is an unincorporated community 8 miles North East of Springfield on the Mohawk river. The post office was established in 1876 and originally called Isabel after Isabel Applegate an early settler. Around 1900 a railroad was built through the Mohawk Valley to help local mills ship their timber. A station was built near the post office and named Marcola after Mary Cole, the wife of the towns founder Columbus Cole. in 1901 the name of the post office was changed to Marcola. The 1938 covered bridge, listed in National Registry of Historic Places, was featured in the 1965 James Stewart movie Shenandoah.
