Located 8 miles South of Eugene/Springfield with a population of 4650, the town was founded in 1872 by Alvin Hughes and James Robinett, each with a 5 acre land donation. The Post office opened in 1873. Ben Holladay of the Oregon-California Rail Road named the city after the U.S. Postmaster General at the time John A Creswell.
The economy centered around a local grist mill. Agriculture included wheat, cattle, and hog farming. By the time of the city's incorporation in 1909 there were 5,000 acres of producing fruit orchards, a cannery, a packing plant and a fruit dryer.
