| Cottage Grove is located in the Southern most end of the Willamette Valley. The head waters of the southern fork of the Willamette River are located in the hills above Cottage Grove Reservoir south of the town. The Southern Valley was inhabited by the Kalapuya Indians until the first settlers arrived in 1848 via The Oregon Trail and then the Applegate Trail. Gold was discovered in the Bohemia Mountains East of Cottage Grove in 1863. Commercial mining ended in the 1930's but many private claims still operate in the area around the ghost town of Bohemia City. Bohemia Mining days are celebrated every year in the Cottage Grove area. Dorena Reservoir just east of town, was built in the late 1940's after moving the town of Dorena to what is now the eastern edge of the lake. Cottage Grove is in the heart of Lane County's "covered bridge tour" and received the All American City award in 1968 and 2004. |
