The town of Coburg [pop.1075] is located 6 miles north of Eugene.
Jacob C Spores and Johnny Diamond arrived in 1847 & built the first home. The next year Jacob Spores tied two canoe's together and started the first ferry service across the McKenzie River. That year Johnny Diamond was the first white man to discover Diamond Lake and Diamond Peak both named after him. Spores started the first saw mill along the McKenzie in 1855. In 1865 Charles Payne is credited with naming the town, which was know as a place to buy good horse stock. After re-shoeing a particularly fine stallion from Coburg Germany he hung the old shoes on the wall saying "I name this place Coburg" and the name stuck.
